Women's Golf Wins NC State Match Play Championship
April 9, 2024 | Women's Golf
Megan Streicher pulled ahead on the 15th hole then halved the next three to secure the decisive point in North Carolina's 3-2 win over Virginia Tech on Tuesday to win the NC State Match Play at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Streicher (1 up), Reagan Southerland (2&1) and Kayla Smith (4&3) provided the points for the Tar Heels, who were playing in the championship match for the third consecutive season.
Streicher made birdies on the sixth, eighth and ninth holes, the latter from 25 feet, to go 3 up. The Hokies' Emily Mathews evened the match with wins on 11, 12 and 13, but Streicher won the par-5 15th hole with a par to pull ahead for good.
Smith led wire-to-wire, winning five of the first 10 holes and closing her match for the second match in a row on the 15th hole.
Southerland lost the first hole to Becca DiNunzio, but pulled even on the fourth and went ahead for good on the fifth. She closed her match with a par on 17.
Streicher and Smith both went 3-0 for Carolina in the three matches in the NC State Match Play, while Southerland and Inez Ng were both 2-1.
"It was big for Reagan to win the first match, Kayla had a pretty sizeable lead all day, and then we had two shots to win there at the end," says UNC head coach Aimee Neff. "Yesterday, we put Megan out first in both matches and she won both and today we put her in the anchor match and she handled that really well."
The title is Carolina's third of the season. UNC won the St Andrews Collegiate Links in Scotland in October and the UCF Challenge in Orlando in February.
"We're trending the right way," says Neff. "We won in Scotland where it was a combination of stroke play and medal match play, UCF was all stroke play and this event is match play so it's good for our players to understand as we head into the postseason that we can handle any format. That's good for us to build off. We know playing at Carolina is an honor and winning is a tradition. We just want to continue to be part of that tradition. Our men's team continues to do great things, they just won in Augusta, so it's a great time to be part of Carolina Golf."
