Wake Forest Edges Women's Golf In ACC Semifinals
April 21, 2024 | Women's Golf
The University of North Carolina women's golf team put the first point on the board before defending national champion and top-seed Wake Forest won the next three to defeat the Tar Heels, 3-1, Sunday in the semifinals of the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship at Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington.
Tar Heel freshman Reagan Southerland was 1 up through the ninth hole then won the 10th, 11th and 14th holes to close her match against Mimi Rhodes, 4&3.
Sophomore Megan Streicher was leading All-America Rachel Kuehn 1 up through 16 when the Demon Deacons clinched the victory, so Streicher and Kuehn's match was halted and officially is recorded as unfinished. Streicher trailed 1 up through the third hole, tied the match on seven and went ahead for good by winning the 10th and 13th holes.
Macy Pate defeated Ing Iadpluem, 3&2, and Carolina Lopez-Chacarra beat Inez Ng, in a back-and-forth match, 3&2 for Wake Forest's first two points.
Brooke Rivers then won the 16th and 18th holes to defeat Kayla Smith 1 up to give the Deacons their third point to clinch the match.
The Tar Heels advanced to match play by finishing fourth after 54 holes of stroke play Thursday through Saturday.
The NCAA women's golf regionals will be announced Wednesday, April 24, at 2 p.m. on the Golf Channel.
