Men's Tennis Posts Third Straight Shutout Win, 4-0 Over Louisville

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.— Graduate student Phillip Jordan won the clinching match on senior day as No. 24 North Carolina beat No. 38 Louisville, 4-0, on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Chewning Tennis Center.
Prior to the match, the Tar Heels honored departing seniors and graduate students Jordan, Peter Murphy, Will Peters, Karl Poling and Anuj Watane, playing in their final regular season home matches.
The Tar Heels, who are No. 24 in the ITA national rankings this week, improved to 13-5 this season and 7-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina has won 10 of its last 12 matches, including the last three by shutout.
Louisville fell to 10-12 overall and 2-6 in the ACC. UNC is 11-2 all-time against the Cardinals.
Carolina won the doubles point to start the afternoon and never looked back.
The Tar Heels took early, 3-0 leads in all three doubles matches to set the tone from the outset of the afternoon. Murphy and Patrick Schoen (No. 2) and Peters and Poling (No. 3) both cruised to 6-0 victories to claim the doubles point.
Schoen, Poling and Jordan won their singles matches.
How It Happened
Doubles
• At No. 2, Schoen and Murphy cruised to a 6-0 win over Miguel Avendano and Andre' Steinbach.
• Seconds later, Peters and Poling grabbed the doubles point with a quick, 6-0 win over Natan Rodrigues and Kosuke Nakanishi at No. 3.
• The match at No. 1 doubles went unfinished with a 3-3 score in the first set.
Singles
• Schoen jumped out to a 3-0 lead over #90 Will Mayew at No. 4 and cruised to a 6-1, first-set victory. Schoen fell behind, 1-0, in the second set, 1-0, then ran off three consecutive wins for a 3-1 lead. The Tar Heel freshman won the second set, 6-4, to give UNC a 2-0 team lead.
• Poling took his first set against Steinbach, 6-3 before winning the first four games of the second set and eventually earning a 6-1 victory.
• Jordan rallied by Rodrigues in the first set, 6-3, the picked up a break in final game of the second set to clinch a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2 and a 4-0 team victory.
• The matches of Benjamin Kittay (No. 1 singles), Peters (No. 5) and Watane (No. 6) went unfinished.
Notes & Tidbits
• Start time for the match was pushed back over 35 minutes from noon to 12:30 to allow time to clean pollen off the courts.
• The Tar Heels played without sophomore Will Jansen for the second time this weekend.

• The Tar Heels will close the 2024 regular season with three consecutive road ACC matches. First up is a date at Duke on Saturday April 6.
