Softball Improves To 10-1 With Saturday Doubleheader Sweep

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina softball team continued its hot start to the 2024 season on Saturday afternoon, improving to 10-1 with a pair of wins over Mount St. Mary's and George Washington on the second day of the Carolina Classic.
As a team, the Tar Heels combined for 24 hits, 17 runs, 4 home runs, two doubles and eight walks in 12 innings.
Carolina opened the day with a 7-1 victory over Mount St. Mary's, led by freshman pitcher Nikki Harris who threw a gem in the circle. Harris (2-0) threw her first complete game in just her second career appearance, tallying 13 strikeouts, the most strikeouts for a UNC pitcher since 2019, and allowing just four hits and an unearned run.
At the plate, Alex Coleman, Skyler Brooks, Sanaa Thompson, Autumn Owen and Destiny Middleton each recorded a pair of hits against the Mountaineers, while Thompson and Isabela Emerling both hit home runs. Emerling led Carolina with three RBIs in the victory.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Tar Heels defeated George Washington 10-1 in five innings.
Britton Rogers earned the win in the circle against the Revolutionaries, improving to 4-0, allowing just one hit in three innings of work. Talia Hannappel made her fourth appearance of the season, throwing two innings of relief to close out the game and giving up just one earned run.
Owen hit her first career grand slam and second home run of the season, finishing the game with four RBIs.
Kate Bubela tallied her third career multi-hit performance, going 3-for-3 at the plate and hitting her first career home run.
Caroline Fox made her first career start as the designated player, notching her first career hit and RBI in her first plate appearance of the game.
The Tar Heels will wrap up the weekend with a pair of games on Sunday, playing Lipscomb and Mount St. Mary's in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
