Heels Top Hoos 4-0 in Heavyweight Clash
October 25, 2024 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The dynamic duo of Ryleigh Heck and Charly Bruder continued on their season-long war path as they combined to score all of No. 2 North Carolina's goals in a 4-0 victory over No. 4 Virginia on Friday night at Karen Shelton Stadium.
Â
In what was the highest ranked matchup of the season for the Tar Heels (13-0, 6-0 ACC), the star forwards and a stellar defense once again carried the day. The Carolina back line did not allow a shot until there were fewer than three minutes remaining in the game, and each of those attempts was blocked. Goalkeeper Abigail Taylor picked up her eighth shutout of the year without having to make a save.
Â
The game started as a cagey affair, as the first quarter concluded with only the Tar Heels mustering a lone shot. The second period was heading for a similar outcome before Heck pounced on an errant back pass and patiently picked her spot to open the scoring. The goal put her into double digits on the year and just one point shy of matching her total from last season.
Â
The reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Bruder once again put herself in consideration as she scored three in the second half to secure the win for the Tar Heels. She now has 20 total goals on the season, has three hat tricks in her last six contests and has scored multiple goals in four straight games. She's been unstoppable, and head coach Erin Matson can only hope her form continues as the postseason quickly approaches.
Â
All three of Bruder's goals must have felt like déjà vu for the Virginia defense, as each of them came from very similar looking penalty corner routines. Corner specialist Pleun Lammers picked up a hat trick of assists herself with trappers Kelly Smith and Katie Dixon getting their names on the scoresheet as well.
Â
Lammers is second only to Heck in assists this season, with the pair holding down the top two spots in the conference with 10 and 13 respectively. Her performance also helped her crack into the top-10 in points in the ACC.
Â
The weekend full of heavyweight bouts is just beginning for the Tar Heels. On Sunday for senior day, they will face No. 9 Boston College at noon in Karen Shelton Stadium in the final home game of the regular season.
