Volleyball Downs Wake Forest In Three Sets

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Carolina volleyball team (13-2, 5-1 ACC) swept Wake Forest (10-7, 2-4 ACC) (25-21, 25-16, 25-17) Sunday in Reynolds Gymnasium.Â
The Tar Heels bounced back from Friday's loss in an offensive outburst, hitting .402 for the match, led by four players hitting above .400. Mabrey Shaffmaster hit a career high .750, and Chelsea Thorpe hit .519 while producing 16 kills, tying her career high. Freshman Jackie Taylor hit a career best .875 with seven kills also tying her career high.
In a back-and-forth set, Carolina pulled ahead for good after claiming a two point lead at 15-13. Zoe Behrendt helped facilitate the offense, dishing out double-digit assists in the first set alone. UNC's offense produced two separate runs of at least three points scored in a row throughout the first set, winning 25-21.
In the second set, UNC quickly pulled ahead, jumping out to an 11-5 lead and holding off a run by Wake Forest. Carolina's offense closed out the second set scoring four points in a row, as the Tar Heels launched back-to-back aces to seal the set.Â
Carolina opened the final set with back-to-back aces by Shaffmaster as part of a four-nothing run, giving the Tar Heels six aces for the match as they went on to win 25-17.
The Tar Heels have the first match-up of their weekend in Virginia against Virginia Tech at Cassell Coliseum on Friday, Oct. 18, at 6:00 p.m. EST in Blacksburg, Va.
