Gymnastics Begins ACC Competition Against NC State Friday At Home

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A rivalry showdown will take place Friday night in Carmichael Arena as the North Carolina gymnastics team hosts NC State, marking the start of Atlantic Coast Conference competition in the inaugural ACC season.Â
Introductions will start at 7:15 p.m. ET with action set to commence at 7:30 p.m. The meet will air on ACCNX with Matt Krause and Sydney Snead on call.

The meet will be a Blue Out and fans are encouraged to wear their best Carolina blue attire. Fans are also welcome to join the team for a poster signing session immediately after the meet. Â

Ten Things to Know
- 2024 marks UNC's first season back in the ACC. The league previously sponsored a conference championship in gymnastics in 1984.
- North Carolina and NC State tied for first in the inaugural ACC Preseason Coaches Poll after each receiving a pair of first-place votes.Â
- Lali Dekanoidze and Julia Knower were named to the first-ever ACC Preseason Watch List. Freshman Camryn Rueda was tabbed to the inaugural ACC Newcomer Watch List.Â
- Dekanoidze was named the first-ever ACC Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 9 after scoring a 9.925 on vault, a new career high and moving up to be tied for third all-time in school history.
- Isabelle Schaefer became the program's first ACC Specialist of the Week on Jan. 15, earning the honor after matching her career-high 9.925 on bars.
- Dekanoidze's 9.925 on vault and Schaefer's 9.925 on bars are the highest scores in the conference on their respective events heading into week three of competition.
- UNC's final tally of 49.150 on vault in its season and home opener was the team's best score on the event since Feb. 19, 2022.
- In their last outing on Jan. 12, the Tar Heels scored a 195.150 to improve upon their 193.725 from the season opener on Jan. 5.Â
- Last year against NC State at home, Dekanoidze broke the program record on bars with a 9.975. She was named a WCGA First Team All-American on that event in 2023.
- North Carolina was ranked 32nd in the WCGA Preseason Poll, the second year in a row the team received a preseason nod.
