Softball Earns Midweek Victory Over Winthrop
February 28, 2023 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Kenna Raye Dark earned her second career victory in the circle on Tuesday, helping the Carolina softball team to a 7-1 victory over Winthrop at Anderson Stadium.
Dark allowed just four hits in 6.2 innings of work with no walks and a strikeout.
Alex Brown led the Tar Heel offense, going a career-best 3-of-4 at the plate with three RBIs and her first double of the season. Bri Stubbs, Abby Settlemyre, Kianna Jones and Carlie Myrtle all had a hit in the win, while Jones and Myrtle each tallied an RBI.
The Tar Heels were speedy on the bases as well, recording six stolen bases from five different players, the most in a game for Carolina since swiping seven against Detroit Mercy on Feb. 9, 2020.
The Eagles got on the board first in the top of the first, loading the bases, before a hit-by-pitch plated their first and only run of the game. The Tar Heels didn't trail long, scoring three runs, all off the bat of Brown, in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead.
Carolina added another run in the bottom of the third before taking a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs on four hits and an Eagle error.
With the victory, the Tar Heels improve to 7-9 and are now 5-2 at home this season.
Up next, the Tar Heels travel to Columbia for a midweek game at South Carolina on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
