Softball Hosts Winthrop, Travels To South Carolina For Midweek Games

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After spending the weekend in South Florida at the Joan Joyce Classic, the Carolina softball team (6-9) returns to action with back-to-back midweek matchups. The Tar Heels host Winthrop at 5 p.m. on Tuesday before traveling to South Carolina for a 6 p.m. border battle with the Gamecocks on Wednesday.
Carolina's matchup with the Eagles will be streamed from Anderson Stadium on ACCNX, while the Tar Heels will face the Gamecocks on SECN+.

- South Carolina head coach Beverly Smith was a standout player for coach Donna J. Papa at Carolina from 1991-94, becoming the first Tar Heel to earn ACC Player of the Year honors in 1994. Smith also served as an assistant and associate coach for her former head coach from 1999-2004 and from 2004-2010
- Alex Brown is having a breakout offensive season through the first 15 games. In 102 at-bats as a freshman, Brown tallied 16 hits. In 41 at-bats this season, she already has 13 hits
- Lilli Backes has pitched the fourth-most innings (40.1) of any pitcher in the ACC this season
- Abby Settlemyre and Kianna Jones, who both have perfect fielding percentages, rank No. 1 and No. 2 in the ACC in fielding percentage
- Settlemyre, who started every game in 2019 and 2020, had never hit more than one home run in a season. She already has three this season, matching Kiersten Licea for most on the team
- Destiny Middleton has had a hit in 13 of Carolina 15's games this season. She has gotten on-base in all but one game this season
- Bri Stubbs and Middleton are not only leading the Tar Heels on the field, but in the classroom. Stubbs was named an AD's Scholar Athlete on Feb. 24 and Middleton was honored with a 2023 Weaver-James-Corrigan Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship from the ACC on Feb. 24
