Women's Golf Hosts Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational At Governors Club
October 8, 2023 | Women's Golf
The Carolina women's golf team hosts the annual Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational Monday and Tuesday, October 9-10, at the Governors Club in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heel Invitational has been played each year since 1976. This is the second consecutive season the Governors Club has played host to the event due to the renovations at UNC's Finley Golf Club. Last year, Kentucky swept the titles, winning the team championship by five strokes over Wake Forest, and Wildcat Jensen Castle was the medalist, beating Duke's Phoebe Brinker in a one-hole playoff.
Kentucky shot 4-under 860. Wake Forest, which went on to win the 2023 NCAA championship, was second at 1 over and the Tar Heels were third at +13. Castle and Brinker were tied after 54 holes at 7-under 209.
Four Tar Heels finished in the top 20. Kayla Smith shot a second-round 68 and tied for eighth at even par. Megan Streicher was 1 over to tie for 12th and Inez Ng and Riley Quartermain tied for 20th at 5 over.
This year's 14-team field includes UNC, 19th-ranked Auburn, Baylor, Campbell, 23rd-ranked Florida, 25th-ranked Florida State, Kentucky, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, NC State, Rollins, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.
The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. Play begins both days with shotgun starts at 9 a.m.
The Tar Heels are paired with Florida, Kentucky and Michigan State on Monday.
Carolina's lineup includes freshman Reagan Southerland, sophomore Inez Ng, sophomore Megan Streicher, fifth-year senior Kayla Smith and senior Crista Izuzquiza.
Senior Natalia Aseguinolaza, junior Riley Quartermain, sophomore Vilde Nystrøm and freshman Ing Iadpluem will also compete as individual entries.
The Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational is UNC's third start of the fall. The Tar Heels were ninth at Michigan State and sixth at 10 under par in the Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt.
