MTEN Roars Past Navy, 4-1, Into NCAA 2nd Round

CHAPEL HILL—North Carolina dropped the doubles point, then roared back to beat Navy, 4-1, in an NCAA Men's Tennis Championship first-round match on Friday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Logan Zapp won the clincher for the Tar Heels, breaking serve in the final game to beat Jack McBride, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4 singles. UNC won for the ninth time in its last 11 matches and improved to 17-8 in 2022. Navy's season came to an end at 31-11.
Carolina has won 17 consecutive NCAA matches it has hosted (2012, '14-'19, '21-'22).
The Tar Heels move on to the second round to face Arizona on Saturday at 4 p.m. Earlier in the day, the No. 16-ranked Wildcats overcame a 2-0 deficit, coming back to defeat No. 39 Princeton, 4-2, in the day's first match.
Both of Friday's matches originally were scheduled to be played outdoors at the Cary Tennis Park but moved inside in Chapel Hill due to thunderstorms in the area.
The Midshipmen started the afternoon strong, winning the doubles point with wins at No. 3 over Benjamin Sigouin and Peter Murphy and at No. 1 over 16th-ranked Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger. The Tar Heel duo of Casey Kania and Zapp won, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Sigouin picked up a quick, straight-set win over Gavin Seagraves at No. 2 to tie the team score at 1-all. Back-to-back wins by Kiger at No. 3 and Murphy at No. 6 gave the Tar Heels a 3-1 lead before Zapp won the clincher.
Kiger's win was his 100th career singles victory.
