Early Runs Propel UNC Past Winthrop

CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina scored in each of the four innings, building a six-run lead and held on beat Winthrop, 7-3, at Boshamer Stadium on Wednesday.
The No. 24 Tar Heels racked up 11 hits with Johnny Castagnozzi, Tomas Frick, Hunter Stokely and Angel Zarate collecting two hits each. Zarate also drove in a pair of runs as did Alberto Osuna, who hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second.
Osuna's home run broke a 1-1 tie and put Carolina (8-1) ahead to stay.
UNC added two more runs in the second inning as Zarate and Frick both came through with two-out run scoring hits. It added another run in the third and fourth inning to build a 7-1 lead.
After Winthrop (2-6) scored once in the fifth on a Robby Taul home run, the Eagles threatened to score multiple runs in the seventh inning.
Ty Hooks plated Taul in the top of the seventh with two outs. UNC reliever Shawn Rapp was then brought in to get the Heels out of the inning that had two runners on base. He struck out Dillon Morton on five pitches to end the Eagles' scoring threat.
The Tar Heels used eight pitchers to earn the victory, with Nik Pry picking up the win after tossing three innings out of the bullpen. Dalton Mims was saddled with the loss after surrendering four runs on five hits in the second inning.
NOTABLES
• Freshman Vance Honeycutt swiped his 10th consecutive base to start the season. He is 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts through nine games.
• Zarate extended his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to 32 consecutive games. He also recorded his fourth multi-RBI game of the season, tops on the squad.
• Castagnozzi posted his team-leading fifth multi-hit game of the season.
• Castagnozzi and Osuna each hit their second home run of the year.
• Stokely made his first start of the season and went 2-for-3.
• The Tar Heels used a season-high eight pitchers, including five in the final three innings.
• Although it was a non-save situation, Caden O'Brien got the final out for the third time in the last five games.

• Serretti doubled to left center in the bottom of the first to score Frick from first base.

• Castagnozzi hit a solo home run in the third inning that hit the left field videoboard.
• Zarate singled up the middle in the bottom of the fourth inning to plate Honeycutt, who led off the frame with a triple.
• Robby Taul led off the top of fifth inning with a home run for Winthrop.
• Ty Hooks' two-out single in the top of the seventh inning scored Taul from second base.

The Tar Heels will welcome Coastal Carolina to Chapel Hill for a three-game weekend series starting Friday, March 4. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
