Heels Head To Atlanta For NCAA Women's Championships

CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina women's swimming and diving team heads back to Atlanta this week for the 2022 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech.
The championship event begins Wednesday, March 16 and concludes Saturday, March 19.
Live coverage of the NCAA Championships will be available on ESPN3, with prelims starting at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m. Live results will be available on the NCAA Championships Central page and to paid subscribers on the MeetMobile app.
Carolina will send a total of nine student-athletes to the event, including 2021 NCAA 1-meter and 3-meter springboard runner-up Aranza Vazquez along with four qualified swimmers and four alternates. Additionally, all five Tar Heel relay teams will compete in the championships.
Senior Grace Countie earned the most championship invitations with three: 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke, ranking fourth nationally in the 50 free, 12th in the 100 back and 15th in the 100 free. Last season the Raleigh native earned All-America accolades in the 50 free and 100 back. She placed fifth in the 50 free, seventh in the 100 back and ninth in the 100 free at the 2021 NCAA Women Swimming & Diving Championships.
Countie will be joined by senior Sophie Lindner and freshman Greer Pattison in the 100 backstroke. Lindner earned honorable mention All-America accolades in the 100 and 200 backstroke last season and seeded 17th in the 100 back this season. She'll also compete in the 200 backstroke where she is seeded 14th.
Junior Ellie VanNote will represent the Tar Heels in the 100 and 200 butterfly events.
Vazquez will compete in all three diving events after finishing first in the 1-meter springboard and third in the 3-meter and platform competitions at the NCAA Zone B Championships. A year ago, she earned the silver medal in the 1 and 3-meter events.
