Team Played National Championship Course on Trip
Carolina women's golf travels west to Mesa, Ariz., to compete in the Clover Cup March 11-13 at the Longbow Golf Club in a 54-hole event hosted by the University of Notre Dame.
The Tar Heels are playing for the third time this semester and second straight week.
"We have a good energy, a good mood about our team right now," says head coach Aimee Neff, "and are looking forward to having another opportunity to see how we match up against a strong field."
The Tar Heels were also able to get in a round on Wednesday at Grayhawk Golf Club, home of both the 2022 NCAA Women's and Men's Championships.
"It's important for the development of our program to take advantage of these opportunities to play on a national championship course and simulate the conditions that we could see in the postseason," says Neff.
Carolina's lineup for the Clover Cup includes sophomore Nicole Adam, juniors Kayla Smith and Krista Junkkari, freshman Stephany Kim and sophomore Natalia Aseguinolaza. This group is playing together in a tournament for the first time.
"Kayla continues to play steady and Nicole is trending positively, so that's good to see," says Neff.
Adam shot 71 in the final round at the Moon Golf Invitational and was Carolina's top finisher at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate with rounds of 72-75-73. The Pinehurst, N.C., native qualified for the 2021 NCAA Columbus Regional.
Smith is second on the team in stroke average at 73.33 and has finished in the top 20 in four starts in six tournaments this season.
The Tar Heels and Fighting Irish are joined in the Clover Cup by Cincinnati, Clemson, Colorado State, East Tennessee State, Florida Atlantic, FIU, Georgia, Kansas State, Kentucky, LSU, Mercer, New Mexico, Oklahoma, TCU and Texas A&M.
Following the Clover Cup the Tar Heels compete April 3-4 in the NC State Match Play and don't return to tournament stroke play until April 14 at the ACC Championship in Pawley's Island, S.C.
