Durham, N.C. - The North Carolina fencing team competed Sunday in the 2022 ACC Fencing Team Championships at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. The Tar Heels came into this competition fresh off of the ACC Individual Championships that occurred the day before.
The men's team competed in the morning and were forced to face two of the toughest programs in the nation. In their first round matchup against No. 6 Duke, the Tar Heels were able to hang around and keep it close, trailing 11-9 with only seven bouts remaining, however, Duke was able to pull away in the end,17-10.
The Tar Heels came face to face with the No. 1 ranked team in the country, Notre Dame, in the second round. Carolina was able to hang tight with the eventual ACC Champions early, but the Fighting Irish were able to build a lead and win, 17-10.
The third round saw the men fence against Boston College. Carolina saw success early and raced out to a 7-3 lead. The Eagles then came roaring back, ending the match on a 13-4 run and winning, 16-11.
"We started out a lot of our meets, even a lot of our bouts, really well. The idea is that we have to find a way to close. We have to find a way to finish out what we started," said UNC Head Coach Matt Jednak.
The women's team competed in the afternoon with hopes of winning their first team championship since 2018. The Tar Heels faced off against Duke in the first round, hanging with the Blue Devils early and tying the score at 4-4. Duke then went on to win five consecutive bouts and didn't look back to win, 19-8.
Notre Dame was waiting for the Tar Heels in the second round. The Fighting Irish dominated throughout and won by a 19-8 margin.
In the final round against Boston College, the women were able to turn things around. The Tar Heels jumped out to an early 7-2 lead and never looked back. Carolina won the bout convincingly in the end, 18-9.
"They found a little bit extra within themselves to finish this one off," said Jednak.
Next up for the Tar Heels is NCAA Regionals on March 12 in Princeton, New Jersey.
