Makenna Jones and Elizabeth Scotty Win NCAA Doubles Title
ORLANDO - Makenna Jones and Elizabeth Scotty are NCAA National Champions!
The North Carolina duo won just the second doubles title in program history on Friday afternoon in the finals of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship from the USTA National Campus.
Seeded fourth in the field, Jones and Scotty defeated No. 19 Kylie Collins and Lulu Sun from Texas, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 10-8.
Jones and Scotty quickly fell behind 3-0 in the opening set, but rallied to square the set at 3-3. Later on, they forced a tiebreaker that saw them win seven of the final eight points in the breaker to collect the first set, 7-6 (3).
The all-freshman tandem from Texas answered back by taking the second set, 6-4, setting up a dramatic finish with a super breaker to decide the match.
The third set was tied 8-all when Jones and Scotty dug deep to secure the final two points and the national title.
Jones and Scotty join the 2007 national champions Jenna Long and Sara Anundsen as the only two doubles teams in Tar Heel history to win the NCAA doubles final.
Friday caps another historic season for the Carolina women's tennis team. The Tar Heels earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Team Championship for the first time, reached the Final Four and set a new ACC record with 48-straight dual match victories.
Carolina finished the season with a 30-1 record and ranked No. 2 in the nation according to the ITA, the best in program history.
Earlier this week, top seed Sara Daavettila reached the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship.
