Tar Heels Sweep Hammer At Day 1 of Virginia Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – North Carolina swept the hammer throw on Friday at the Virginia Invitational, with Jill Shippee winning the women's event and James Joycey the men's.

The Tar Heels continue competition there on Saturday, with field events beginning at 1 p.m. and running events at 2.

Shippee's throw of 64.81m (212-7) led the women's field of nine in the opening event at the Cavaliers' Lannigan Field. Teammate Grace Wills took fifth place and JoEllen Driscoll eighth

On the men's side, Joycey won with a throw of 66.07m (216-9). Troy Yearwood was third and
Madias Loper sixth.
