Carolina Sweeps Deacs To Close Regular Season

CHAPEL HILL - No. 1 North Carolina closed out the regular season in style with a 7-0 shutout of 31st ranked Wake Forest on Friday afternoon from the Cone Kenfield Tennis Center's outdoor courts.
North Carolina improved to 23-0 on the season and extends its program record winning streak to 41 matches that spans the abbreviated 2020 season and 2021 campaign. The Tar Heels also put the finishing touches on their perfect 13-0 record within the Atlantic Coast Conference, the seventh time the program has gone unbeaten in league play. Five instances have occurred since 2010 under the guidance of head coach Brian Kalbas.
Carolina won the doubles point for the 16th straight match, grabbing wins on courts two and three to take a 1-0 lead. No. 16 Makenna Jones and Elizabeth Scotty blanked No. 25 Brooke Killingsworth and Anna Brylin, 6-0, on court two, and No. 29 Alle Sanford and Reilly Tran won 6-2 from court three.
The bottom three in the singles setup once again set the pace in securing the victory. No. 38 Fiona Crawley posted a 6-0, 6-1 win on court four, No. 20 Makenna Jones was next to win from court four, 6-3, 6-0, and No. 115 Reilly Tran earned the vital fourth point on court six with a 6-2, 6-3, win.
No. 2 Sara Daavettila notched her fifth top-25 win in conference play to boost her resume in seeking the ACC Player of the Year trophy. From court one, Daavettila knocked off No. 15 Carolyn Campana, 6-2, 6-3 to improve her singles record to 15-1 this spring.
No. 36 Alexa Graham and No. 23 Cameron Morra both dropped their opening sets, but rallied with identical 10-3 super breaker wins in set three to make it a clean sweep of the Demon Deacons, who have now last their last 18 matches against the Heels.
Carolina is the top seed in the upcoming ACC Championship that takes place next weekend in Rome, Georgia. Winners of the last four conference championships, the Tar Heels will play in a quarterfinals match on Friday at 10 a.m.
