
UNC Wins Program Record 28th Straight Dual Match

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia - No. 1 North Carolina set a new program record with its 28th straight dual-match victory on Sunday at No. 14 Virginia. The Tar Heels opened up the Atlantic Coast Conference portion of the season with a 5-2 victory at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
North Carolina (10-0, 1-0 ACC) pulled out the doubles point to take a critical 1-0 lead on the road at the nationally-ranked Cavaliers. Court one's duo of Sara Daavettila and Cameron Morra clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Rosie Johanson and Emma Navarro. The Tar Heel tandem improved to 5-0 all-time playing together.
Makenna Jones and Elizabeth Scotty also earned a doubles win, 6-2, over Natasha Subhash and Sofia Munera on court two.
With a roster filled with so much veteran talent, it was two freshmen that set the tone in singles.
No. 120 Fiona Crawley continued her torrid start to the season with a 6-1, 6-0, victory over Hibah Shaikh on court four. Crawley is a perfect 10-0 in singles play, 8-0 in duals.
Fellow rookie Reilly Tran later secured UNC's fifth-straight win over Virginia on court six with a 6-0, 6-3, result over senior Vivian Glozman. Tran, who hails from Fairfax, Virginia, improves to 6-0 on the season.
Sandwiched in-between the Crawley and Tran wins was a No. 79 Elizabeth Scotty straight-set victory, 6-1, 6-4, over Rosie Johanson.
Anika Yarlagadda made it 5-0 with a defeat of No. 91 Sofia Munera 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (6), on court five. The sophomore from Michigan is also unbeaten in 2021 with an 8-0 singles mark.
The team win snapped a tie with the 2015 Carolina squad that won its opening 27 games of that season.
Virginia (4-2) had won three straight matches entering Sunday.
Carolina begins a four-match home stand this Friday against Louisville at 3 p.m.
