Women's Tennis Escapes Upstart Rebels

CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina will have a chance to defend its ITA National Team Indoor Championship in 2021. Despite falling behind to upstart Ole Miss, the top-ranked Tar Heels earned a 4-1 victory on Saturday in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Championship match from Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
North Carolina (3-0) dropped the doubles point for just the second time in the last 22 matches going back to the 2020 season. The 24th ranked duo of Sabina Maachalova and Alexa Bortles clinched the opening point for the Rebels on court one.
Singles proved to be a much better session for the Tar Heels. Anika Yarlagadda was first to grab a win, 6-0, 6-2, on court six. Freshman Fiona Crawley gave UNC the lead for good, 6-0, 6-1, on court five.
Sara Daavettila earned career win No. 130 with a 6-1, 6-2, victory on court two to inch Carolina one point closer to victory.
Cameron Morra shut the door on Ole Miss (1-1) on court three with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win to send the Tar Heels to Stillwater, Okla., Feb. 5-7 for the ITA National Indoors.
Carolina is the defending national champion after winning its fourth indoor team title last year in Chicago. The Tar Heels have reached the finals of the event six years running, winning the indoor national championship in 2013, '15, '18 and 2020.
Before that, the Tar Heels visit No. 8 Georgia next Saturday in Athens, Ga.
