Tar Heels Open ACC Indoor Championships
February 27, 2020 | Track & Field
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The University of North Carolina track & field program completed day one of the 2020 ACC Indoor Championships Thursday at the Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center. The Tar Heels opened with two individual performances in the men's weight throw followed by appearances in both the men's and women's distance medley relays.
Â
Madias Loper, a junior from Fayetteville, Ga., set a new personal record of 60-9.25 (18.52m) to finish seventh in the men's weight throw. Loper bested his previous PR twice during the competition, continuing a series of personal records in both the weight throw and shot put in 2020.
Â
In the distance medley relays, the Tar Heel women's lineup of Mady Clahane, Maiah Walker, Erin Edmundson and Emmeline Fisher ran a season-best time of 11:36.50 and placed ninth overall. The men's DMR was under review for approximately 45 minutes following the conclusion of the second heat. Though North Carolina initially placed third for a spot on the podium, officials disqualified three of the nine teams in the second heat. Florida State and Pittsburgh were ruled out in addition to Carolina, whose relay was cited for an out-of-zone exchange between the first and second legs. NC State and Duke moved up to third and fourth, respectively, after the final decision was announced.
Competition resumes Friday at noon with the men's 5,000 meters on the track and the women's high jump on the field.
