Carolina Falls Short on Day One of UNCG Invite

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina dropped a pair of games to Purdue and Fairfield to begin the UNCG Invite Saturday in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Carolina and Purdue battled through five scoreless innings in the pitchers' duel before the Boilermakers broke the stalemate for the 1-0 win to begin the day. Although Fairfield scored first, the Tar Heels responded to take the 2-1 lead in the second. However, the Stags scored 11 runs on 15 hits en route to the 11-2 win in their 2020 season opener.
Carolina slides to 6-8 while Purdue improves to 9-5 and Fairfield takes its season opener.
Key Moments vs. Purdue
» Carolina played clean defense throughout the game, turning the fifth double play of the season in the third inning. Megan Dray threw to Campbell Hutcherson to pick off the Boilermakers in the fourth.
» After five scoreless frames, Purdue broke the stalemate with an RBI-single by Cora Bassett for the 1-0 edge in the sixth.
» The Tar Heels scattered four hits throughout the game, including two by Lexi Godwin, but were unable to put a run on the board.
