UNC Wins Doubles Crown In Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS - The North Carolina doubles tandem of senior Makenna Jones and junior Alle Sanford won the doubles title on Sunday at the 2020 Freeman Memorial Tennis Championship from the Fertitta Tennis Complex at UNLV.
Jones and Sanford defeated Stanford's duo of Emma Higuchi and Sara Choy in the doubles title match by a 6-2 margin. They are the third Tar Heel doubles team to win the championship. Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay brought home the crown in 2016 and Carter teamed up with Jessie Aney to win it in 2017.
Earlier in the day, Jones and Stanford posted a 6-0 shutout of top seed and 17th-ranked Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto of Oklahoma State, 6-0, in the semifinals.
Sanford and freshman Kacie Harvey advanced to the semifinals of the singles tournament earlier in the weekend.
No. 2 UNC hosts an ITA Kick-Off Regional this coming Friday and Saturday in Chapel Hill. ODU and Columbia get the weekend underway Friday morning at 10 a.m., before Carolina takes on Auburn at 1 p.m.
