Tar Heels Excited For Opening Weekend
January 15, 2020 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL—The fourth-ranked University of North Carolina men's tennis team will open its spring 2020 dual season with a pair of home dual matches this weekend.
The Tar Heels will host North Carolina Central on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Wofford on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Admission is free.
"We're really excited to get the season going," says 27th-year head coach Sam Paul, the winningest active coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference. "We've got almost our entire team back from last year, we have a great group of seniors with Will [Blumberg] and Simon [Soendergaard], Josh Peck and Ladd Harrison. The players and coaches are chomping at the bit to get going."
Carolina performed well in a final 2020 tuneup last weekend, going 8-3 in individual action at the Alabama Spring Shootout in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The Tar Heels, who have advanced to the NCAA Final Four in two of the last three seasons, return seven lettermen from last year's NCAA semifinalist squad. All-Americas William Blumberg and Benjamin Sigouin are back, as are returning stalwarts Brian Cernoch, Josh Peck, Simon Soendergaard, Mac Kiger and Ladd Harrison.
Carolina also welcomes to the team a talented class of three freshmen that includes Mark Dillon, Rinky Hijikata and Anuj Watane.
