Second-Straight Shutout Boosts Tar Heels To 5-0
September 15, 2019 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Top-ranked North Carolina got goals from six players – including a hat trick from senior Catherine Hayden – in an 8-0 field hockey win over William & Mary Sunday afternoon at Karen Shelton Stadium. For the second game in a row, UNC (5-0) hit a season high in goals while shutting out its opponent.
The Tar Heels were coming off a 6-0 win over Penn last Sunday, but still even with that margin saw plenty of room for improvement. For one thing, they had not scored in the first quarter in any game this season. They made sure to change against the Tribe, with three first-quarter goals.
"We wanted to have a quick start today," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We were really putting an emphasis on starting quickly and getting a result. I would have been happy with one goal and we had three, so mission accomplished there."
In the third minute of play and on UNC's first penalty corner of the game, senior Megan DuVernois scored what would prove to be the gamewinner, putting back a rebound after the initial Tar Heel shot was blocked.
Just over two minutes later, Hayden got her first goal of the day. Sophomore Erin Matson sent a long pass from just short of midfield and Hayden, stationed high in the circle, deflected it toward the cage. Tribe goalkeeper Kimi Jones got her stick on it but couldn't keep the ball from rolling in for a 2-0 Tar Heel lead.
Hayden scored again with 10 seconds to play in the first quarter, gathering the ball after a save and putting it back to make the score 3-0.
In the 27th minute, Hayden scored again, deflecting in a ball from sophomore Riley Fulmer to make the score 4-0. The goal gave the senior forward from Greenwich, Conn., a hat trick of hat tricks for her career: she had one as a sophomore and then a second in her junior year.
"She's a scorer and she gets herself in good position," Shelton said. "She's got that knack and I was happy for her to get on the board."
UNC added to its lead early in the third quarter, when senior Marissa Creatore carried the ball into the circle from the right side and sent a shot across and into the left corner of the cage.
Three minutes later Fulmer added to the total, scoring on a pass from sophomore Abby Pitcairn. "Riley Fulmer has been giving us really good minutes off the bench," Shelton said.
UNC got one more in the third quarter, on a penalty corner with less than a minute remaining in the period. Senior Yentl Leemans sent a pass to the left side, and junior Eva Smolenaars, who had inserted the ball, flipped a shot past the keeper and into the roof of the cage.
Carolina's final goal came three minutes into the fourth quarter on a penalty corner. Leemans passed the ball to Matson, who got around a defender and shot to make it 8-0 Tar Heels.
Junior Amanda Hendry started in goal for UNC, and senior Alex Halpin played the second half. It marked the second game in a row that the two had combined in a shutout.
"I feel like we implemented improvements from last week and it was obvious – we passed the ball better, we defended as a group," Shelton said. "Overall I'm very, very pleased. I'm pleased with the effort and happy that a lot of kids got to play and we got a shutout, which is also very important for us."
Next up for the Tar Heels is the start of the Atlantic Coast Conference season. Louisville visits Shelton Stadium on Friday for a 5 p.m. game.
