Tar Heels Conclude ACC Championships
April 20, 2019 | Women's Golf
GREENSBORO, NC – At the conclusion of three rounds of the ACC Championships at Sedgefield Country Club, the North Carolina Tar Heels' women's golf team finished tied for ninth.
With moderate wind speeds, course conditions became very challenging. Freshman Jennifer Zhou and senior Kelly Whaley led the way for the Tar Heels with 2-over-par 74s.
Earning another top-10 finish in her first season, Zhou's final round was highlighted by three birdies and ten pars.
While Zhou's ACC career is just beginning, Whaley's storied career in the conference came to an end on Saturday afternoon. A four-year starter for the Tar Heels, Whaley competed in every tournament of her career. She holds team records in stroke average in a season (73.24 in 2017-18) and the two lowest tournament scores in school history. Additionally, Whaley became the first Tar Heel to win multiple tournament titles since Catherine O'Donnell (2009-12), after claiming her second-career individual victory at the 2018 Briar's Creek Invitational.
Junior Brynn Walker and sophomore Ava Bergner recorded 7-over-par 79s, the next lowest scores for the Tar Heels.
Junior Mariana Ocano rounded out the Tar Heels' efforts with a 9-over-par 81.
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons captured its sixth conference championship title on Saturday afternoon.
