
Whaley Tied For Third at NCAA Regionals

EAST LANSING, MI – After the first round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional, the Tar Heels are tied for 14th place. A difficult day on the Forest Akers West Golf Course was highlighted by senior Kelly Whaley, who fired a 2-under-par 70, and is currently tied for 3rd place.
Celebrating her birthday in style, Whaley's round featured five birdies, including three on the back nine. In her previous two NCAA Regional tournaments, she has concluded the first round in the top-10.
As a team, the Tar Heels recorded an 18-over-par 306, which currently places the team twelve strokes away from transferring to the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Sophomore Ava Bergner tallied the next best score for the team with a 4-over-par 76, which featured two birdies.
Freshman Nicole Lu finished with a 7-over-par 79, junior Brynn Walker concluded with a 9-over-par 81 and freshman Jennifer Zhou recorded a 13-over-par 85.
At the conclusion of the first round, the Kent State Golden Flashes lead at 6-under-par. The next five schools that are currently in the transfer positions are the Arizona Wildcats (+2), Illinois (+4), Indiana Hoosiers (+5), Michigan State Spartans (+5) and the Campbell Fighting Camels (+6).
The second round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional will begin at 8:00 a.m., and the Tar Heels will begin its second round at 9:06 a.m.
