Carolina Travels to Bryan National Collegiate
March 28, 2019 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL – Following their top-five finish at the Tar Heel Classic Hosted By Suzy Whaley, the Tar Heels return to action at the Bryan National Collegiate Friday through Sunday in Brown Summit, North Carolina.
Â
Tournament play begins Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the par 72, 6,305-yard Champion Course at Bryan Park. The field tees off Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Â
The Tar Heels will bring their most recent starting five to the Brown Summit: Brynn Walker, Ava Bergner, Kelly Whaley, Jennifer Zhou and Nicole Lu. Mariana Ocano will compete as an individual at the Bryan National Collegiate.
Â
"We were very pleased with how they played at the Dominican," head coach Jan Mann said. "We like the course (Bryan National). It's challenging and is in excellent condition. It has had weather issues in the past, but this weekend is a change with nice weather, with the exception of rain on Sunday."
Â
Just north of Greensboro, North Carolina, the Bryan National Collegiate is the Tar Heels' closest tournament to home this spring until the ACC Championship, April 18-20.
Â
"We always enjoy playing in Greensboro," Mann said. "We always have a lot of Carolina family come out and support the team."
Â
Prior to the Tar Heel Classic, Carolina struggled on the course, finishing in the bottom half of teams at both the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate and the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. However, the Tar Heels found their groove and finished fourth of 15 teams in the Dominican Republic. Walker led UNC with a ninth-place finish while Bergner, Whaley and Zhou all finished in the top 25.
Â
"We reviewed the stats from Casa de Campo and we saw that we could improve our abilities around the greens with scrambling and wedge play," Mann said. "They have a lot of greenside bunkers at Bryan National, so we also worked on some bunker scenarios."
Â
The Tar Heels wrap up the regular season at the Brickyard Collegiate hosted by Mercer, April 8 and 9 before the 2019 ACC Championships.
