Tar Heels Earn Their Best Finish of the Season
March 16, 2019 | Women's Golf
La Romana, DO - After two days of wonderful scenery and golf, the Tar Heels earned their best finish of the 2018-19 season, with a fourth place showing at the Tar Heel Classic hosted by Suzy Whaley.
As they entered the third and final round at the Teeth of the Dog in La Romana, Dominican Republic, the Tar Heels were within striking distance of the leaders. However, an up-and-down day saw the women's golf team relinquish one spot in the overall standings.
Sophomore Ava Bergner was red-hot to start her round. Through her first ten holes, Bergner had four birdies, which placed her near the top of the leaderboard, but, with four bogeys on her next six holes, she fell to even-par for the day and finished 14th.
The highest finishing Tar Heel was junior Brynn Walker, who carded a 2-over-par 74 in her final round to finish in a tie for 9th place.
Freshman Jennifer Zhou rallied from two double-bogeys to shoot a 1-over-par 73, which placed her in a tie for 20th.
Senior Kelly Whaley wrapped up her tournament with a 3-over-par 75 and finished in a tie for 18th.
Nicole Lu rounded out the scoring for the Tar Heels with an eight-over-par 80 and ended up in a tie for 32nd.
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons won the tournament by a whopping 19 strokes, extending their second-round lead by 15 strokes.
The Tar Heels will be back in action on Friday March 29, at the Bryan National Collegiate in Brown Summit, NC.
