Carolina Falls Short to Long Beach State

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – North Carolina scored in the first inning and led through five, but the Tar Heels were unable to overcome Long Beach State, falling 8-4, on Saturday morning to complete the Mary Nutter Collegiate Challenge.
Carolina led 4-3 through five innings thanks to a single by Abby Settlemyre and a three-run home run by Megan Dray. However, Beach posted three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh for the 8-4 decision. UNC and Long Beach State sit at 6-6 after Saturday morning's decision.
Key Moments vs. Long Beach State
» Carolina took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Leah Murray drew a leadoff walk. A wild pitch and ground-out advanced her to third before Settlemyre laced an RBI-single through the right side.
» In the second, Settlemyre, Murray and Campbell Hutcherson turned a double play to keep the 49ers off the board.
» The 49ers threatened in the third with two in scoring position due to a leadoff single by Nicole Fry, but solid Carolina defense kept them off the boards. In her third at-bat, Fry launched a three-run homer to left to give the 49ers a 3-1 edge.
» After a pair of singles by Settlemyre and Berlynne Delamora, Dray launched a three-run home run to center to put Carolina back in the lead, 4-3.
» Kiani Ramsey and Settlemyre both singled in the fifth, but were left on base.
» Beach knotted the game in the sixth on a one-run single to center by Alyssa Gonzalez. The 49ers' momentum continued as Taylor Rowland sent a two-run double to right center for a 6-4 edge. In the seventh, Fry recorded her second home run of the day for an 8-4 lead.
» Freshmen Lexi Godwin and Kiersten Licea logged back-to-back singles to lead off the seventh but a batter out of the box call and two flyouts ended the game.
» Hannah George earned the start and went 3.2 innings before Hannah Nommensen entered in relief. Brittany Pickett started the fifth inning in the circle and struck out two. She totaled four on the day.
