Tar Heels in Fourteenth After First Round of Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate

NEW ORLEANS – The North Carolina Tar Heels concluded the first day of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate with a team score of 305 (+17), which places them fourteenth out of eighteen team with two days left to play.
Senior Kelly Whaley and juniors Mariana Ocano and Brynn Walker tied for the lowest rounds for the Tar Heels. Each had a 4-over-par 76, on the par-72, 6,239-yard English Turn course.
Ocano kicked off her round with three birdies in her first seven holes, and made the turn tied for the lead. An up-and-down second nine with 6-bogeys placed Ocano in a tie for 46th after the first day of competition.
Walker's and Whaley's rounds were highlighted by 1-over-par first nines.
Nicole Lu finished with a 5-over-par 77, which featured a ten hole stretch where she was 1-under-par.
Ava Bergner rounded out the Tar Heel golfers with an 8-over-par 80.
At the conclusion of the opening round, the University of Texas Longhorns lead the tournament at 3-under-par.
The second round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate will continue Monday morning.
