UNC Blanks Duke In ITA Indoor Semis
February 11, 2019 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE - North Carolina shutout Duke, 4-0, in the semifinals of the 2019 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship on Monday afternoon. The Tar Heels will play for another indoor national title on Tuesday against Georgia from Nordstrom Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Washington.
North Carolina (9-0), the defending national indoor champs, have now reached the title match in this event five-straight years, winning a total of three championships in 2013, 2015 and 2018. Georgia knocked off top seed Stanford, 4-3, in the other semifinal on Monday,
UNC was impressive in doubles to take the early 1-0 edge over the Blue Devils, who led briefly after winning on court two. However, Sara Daavettila and Alle Sanford answered right back with a 6-4 win on court three. Court one's fifth-ranked team of Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham clinched the point in dominating fashion, 6-2, over the 30th ranked tandem of Maria Mateas and Margaryta Bilokin.
No. 7 Graham was first off in singles to make it a 2-0 Tar Heel advantage. Always a fast-paced player, Graham took her match by a 6-1, 6-4, margin over No. 21 Kelly Chen.
The featured match of the day pinned Carolina's No. 6 Makenna Jones against Duke's No. 11 Maria Mateas on court one. The first set was a brawl that went to a tiebreaker, and ultimately went in favor of Jones. She maintained that momentum and shutout the Blue Devil freshman in the second set to garner the 7-6, 6-0 victory.
Senior Jessie Aney clinched the match on court five in come-from-behind fashion, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, over Margaryta Bilokin.
UNC improves to 23-3 at ITA Indoors since the 2013 season.
