Carolina Finishes First Day of Landfall

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Jennifer Zhou and Nicole Lu had matching scores of 1-over 73 to lead the North Carolina women's golf team on day one of the Landfall Tradition Friday at the Country Club of Landfall. The Tar Heels ended the round in a tie for 11th with an 8-over 296, but sit just 11 shots out of first with two rounds to play.
Zhou carded four birdies in her round, including on the par-5 18th to close out her opening day performance. Zhou and her classmate Lu are tied for 29th overall, five shots back of UCF's Tunrada Piddon.
Freshmen Krista Junkkari and Kayla Smith posted matching 3-over 75s to complete the counters for UNC. Smith carded a team-best five birdies in her round, including four in a strong 2-under back nine.
Ava Bergner posted a 12-over 84 and Mariana Ocano shot a 5-over 77 while competing as an individual.
Alabama and Illinois are tied for first in a crowded field after opening round scores of 3-under 285. Just 14 shots separate the 18 competing teams after one round.
