Tar Heels Set To Host Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational
October 10, 2019 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina women's golf team is set to host the 44th Annual Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational at their home par-72 6,379-yard UNC Finley Golf Course this weekend from Oct. 11-13 in Chapel Hill.
"We always look forward to this event," head coach Jan Mann said. "With Ruth's Chris and Mike and Deane O'Donnell hosting the event, it draws a big crowd. Parents and spectators love to come out and watch the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational."
The Tar Heels starting five will be Kayla Smith, Ava Bergner, Krista Junkkari, Nicole Lu and Jennifer Zhou. Mariana Ocano and Aleks Golde will compete as individuals this weekend. Notably out of the Tar Heels is senior Brynn Walker, who will be competing in the LPGA Qualifying Tournament Stage II at Plantation Golf and Country Club, Venice, FL.
"We're excited for Brynn to have the opportunity," said Mann. "We're going to miss her in the lineup, it's tough to have one of your better players out of the lineup, but we are giving other individuals the opportunity to compete. I feel like we have a strong starting five, even with Brynn out of the lineup, and we are excited to tee it up."
The tournament will feature an 18-team field with seven teams in the Women's Golf Coaches Association top-25; No. 1 Wake Forest, No. 7 Arkansas, No. 9 Duke, No. 14 South Carolina, No. 18 Furman, No. 21 Michigan and No. 25 Alabama. The remainder of the field is composed of UNC-Charlotte, Clemson, Kentucky, Michigan State, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Rollins, Tulane, UNC-Wilmington and Virginia.
The tournament will begin with fixed tee times on No. 1 and No. 10 starting at 8:51 a.m. on Friday. Saturday will follow the same schedule with fixed tee times on No. 1 and No. 10 at 8:51 a.m. Sunday will be a shotgun start scheduled for 9:15 a.m.
The Tar Heels finished seventh in last year's edition of the home event. The Duke Blue Devils repeated as tournament champions with a 14-under-par team performance.
As usual, Mann is looking forward to hosting, but is making sure to keep her team confident on the course.
"One of the things we really focused on with the players is maintaining focus and maintaining composure," Mann said. "Attitudes are contagious on the golf course and you have to act confident before you can even feel confident. We have also been really focusing on their processes and letting the outcome take care of itself."
