CHAPEL HILL - The third-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team marched to a 7-0 victory against East Carolina Wednesday evening at Cone-Kenfield Center.
Courts one and three clinched the doubles point after one hour of play to claim the first point of the night.
The doubles point was a nail biter and forced two courts to go into a tiebreaker, but Carolina came through at the end. The duo of Sara Daavettila and Alexa Graham quickly won 6-0 on court three. Thirty minutes later, No. 2 Makenna Jones and Cameron Morra clinched the doubles point in a tiebreaker, 7-3. Court two, Jessie Aney and Alle Sanford were also in a tiebreaker that went unfinished at 6-6.
In singles, No. 21 Morra quickly made it 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory on court three. Chloe Ouellet-Pizer claimed the third win for the Tar Heels, 6-1, 6-4 on court six. No. 18 Graham clinched the match on court two after a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Sanford, Aney and No. 2 Jones all won in straight sets to close out Carolina's 7-0 victory. Sanford finished fourth, winning 6-2, 6-0 in the four spot. Aney wrapped up court 5 soon after with a score of 6-3, 6-2. Jones was the last one off the court with a 6-4, 6-1 win on court 1.
Carolina will host the ITA Kick-Off Weekend beginning Saturday at 9 a.m. with Princeton and Michigan State. Following that match, the Tar Heels are set to play VCU at 12 p.m.
The consolation and championship matches take place on Sunday.
