No. 12 Tar Heels Shutout Dolphins 2-0
September 3, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Durham, N.C. – For the third consecutive game, No. 12 North Carolina (3-1) has held its opponent to three or fewer total shots and two or fewer shots on goal as the Tar Heels shutout the Jacksonville Dolphins 2-0 on Monday night. Mauricio Pineda and Alex Rose scored for the second consecutive game to secure the win and give the Heels as they out shot the Dolphins 12-2, including 6-0 in shots on goal.
The Tar Heels came out aggressive from the opening whistle on a warm, humid Monday evening in Durham. Carolina controlled the possession from the get go earning three corners within the first 13 minutes of the game before Pineda opened the scoring. After Raul Aguilera whipped in the out swinger from the corner, Nils Bruening flicked the ball on to the back post where Pineda was waiting and tapped it in past the sprawling Jacksonville keeper for the 1-0 lead.
Jacksonville registered its first and only shot of the first half in the 33rd minute, but it didn't trouble James Pyle as it soared way over the net. Carolina out shot the Dolphins 4-1 in the first half with a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Carolina started the second half just like they did the first with a flurry of chances and corner kicks. Alex Moztarzadeh almost doubled the lead twice in a matter of minutes after starting the second half for Jack Skahan who picked up a knock in the first half. In the 57th minute, Moztarzadeh collected the ball about 25 yards out and ripped a shot off the crossbar before being in on goal in the 60th minute but the Jacksonville keeper made a great save to deny the midfielders.
In the 61st minute, Carolina looked like it was going to double the lead after Jelani Pieters was taken down in the box, but Pineda missed his chance at the brace on the night as he missed the penalty wide.
After knocking on the door for most of the second half, Rose finally broke through to double the Tar Heel lead in the 89th minute. After Milo Garvanian made a run in to the box, his initial shot was saved by the keeper but the rebound fell to Rose who was able to tap it in for the second and final goal of the match.
