Bruening Scores Lone Goal, No. 3 Heels Beat Davidson 1-0
September 11, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Davidson, N.C. – The No. 3 Tar Heels took down the Wildcats 1-0 on a stormy night in Davidson courtesy of a header from Nils Bruening in the 15th minute. The Heels outshot the Wildcats 8-4 on the night as they won their fourth game in a row.
Just six minutes in to the first half, both teams found themselves walking back off the field due to mother nature's lightning delay which kept both sides off the field for almost an hour and a half. After the long pause, Davidson came out the aggressor for the first five minutes controlling possession and registering the first shot of the game, a header which was saved by James Pyle.
That seemed to wake up the Tar Heels who responded almost immediately with the first goal of the game in the 15th minute. After earning the first corner of the game, Lucas Del Rosario whipped in a ball to the near post which found the head of Bruening who buried the ball in the back of the net to give the Heels the early 1-0 lead.
Just a few minutes later Bruening almost doubled the Tar Heel lead with a shot from distance that bounced off the crossbar and out of bounds. Both teams trading possession and chances over the next 30 minutes, but neither one could find the back of the net as the Heels took a 1-0 lead in to halftime.
Neither team generated many chances in the second half as each side only registered one shot on goal as the Heels went on to defeat Davidson, 1-0. This is the fifth consecutive game that these two teams have played to be decided by the 1-0 score line, with the Heels holding a 3-2 advantage in those meetings.
Carolina was scheduled to play rival Duke on Friday, but due to impending weather concerns with hurricane Florence that game has been postponed. The Tar Heels will prepare for their next game on the schedule which will be on Tuesday, Sept. 18, against UNCG in Greensboro at 7 p.m.
