May 9, 2018 | Baseball
CONWAY, S.C. – No. 3 North Carolina fell, 5-2, to No. 19 Coastal Carolina on Wednesday night at Springs Brooks Stadium. Ike Freeman hit a two-run home run, his third of the year, while Brandon Riley went 2-3 with a run scored for the Tar Heels at the plate.
Coastal Carolina got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning against Tar Heels starter Taylor Sugg. Seth Lancaster hit a long home-run to right field after a leadoff walk, giving the Chanticleers a quick 2-0 lead. They tacked on another run in the bottom of the third, giving the home team a 3-0 edge after three innings.
Coastal added another run in the fifth inning against Taylor Sugg, who tossed 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. Lee Sponseller laced an RBI single into centerfield for his third hit of the night, giving CCU a 4-0 advantage.
It didn't take long for the Heels to respond in the top of the sixth, however, courtesy of Ike Freeman's third home run of the season. Following a Brandon Riley single, Freeman hit a ball just over the wall in left field to cut the Coastal lead in half, 4-2.
The Chanticleers tacked on another run with a Kieton Rivers solo home run in the eighth inning and held the led throughout the rest of the game, wrapping up a 5-2 win.
