No. 6 Tar Heels Beat Hokies 11-2 In Penultimate Home Game
May 18, 2018 | Baseball
Chapel Hill – After clinching the Coastal Division title Thursday night, the No. 6 Tar Heels took care of business Friday afternoon beating Virginia Tech 11-2. Kyle Datres, Michael Busch and Ashton McGee led the way offensively as they combined to go 11-14 with six RBI, six runs scored with two doubles, a triple and a home run. Datres was a home run short of the cycle.
Just like they have done all year, the Tar Heels jumped out to an early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning for the 3-0 lead. After back-to-back-to-back singles from Dallas Tessar, Michael Busch and Kyle Datres, a sacrifice fly from Ike Freeman and a double from Ashton McGee cleared the bases to put the Heels on top.
The Hokies got one run back in the top of the third inning, but the Tar Heels tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third for the 5-1 lead. Datres led off the inning with a triple that bounced off the right field wall and was driven in on another Freeman sacrifice fly. After driving in two runs in the first inning, McGee launched a solo home run over the right field wall for his second of the year.
Thanks to some shaky Hokie defense, Carolina would tack on another four runs in the fourth inning to take the 9-1 lead before the two teams traded runs in the fifth to make it 10-2. Carolina would eventually tack on one more to make the final score 11-2.
Austin Bergner picked up his sixth win of the season after throwing six innings and giving up three hits and one earned run while striking out four Hokies.
The Tar Heels will play its final game of the 2018 regular season on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET at Boshamer Stadium.
