Tar Heels Dominate Syracuse, 21-12

DURHAM, N.C.—Second-seeded North Carolina (13-3) got seven points each from Ela Hazar and Katie Hoeg and six goals from Jamie Ortega in a 21-12 win over seventh-seeded Syracuse (9-9) on Thursday at Koskinen Stadium on the campus of Duke University.
The Tar Heels advance to Friday's semifinal round to face third-seeded Virginia Tech.
Hazar had three goals and four assists, and Hoeg had two goals and a career-high five assists. Ortega scored six goals, one off her season high of seven set against Duke last weekend, and Kara Klages tied her career high with five goals. Marie McCool had two goals, one assist and six draw controls.
Hoeg's five assists tied the overall tournament record, and her seven points equaled the most ever in the quarterfinals. Hazar's seven points and Ortega's six goals also tied quarterfinal records.
Carolina's 21 goals are its highest total in its 42-game ACC Tournament history and tie the most by any team in any ACC Tournament game.
UNC outshot the Orange, 43-24, including 29-10 in the first half as the Tar Heels ran out to a big lead.
Elise Hennessey (10-2) started for Carolina in goal and picked up the win, making three saves and allowing six goals in the first half. Taylor Moreno entered the game to start the second half and made five saves with six goals allowed.
The Tar Heels rushed out to a 5-1 lead in the opening five minutes, scoring four goals off four Orange turnovers in the early moments to force a timeout. By the time Syracuse called its second timeout of the half at the 14:07 mark, Carolina had an 11-2 lead and Hazar and Ortega already had hat tricks. UNC led, 14-6, at the break.
Carolina continued to control possession for much of the second half, cruising the rest of the way to the victory.
