CHAPEL HILL - Freshman Alle Sanford earned the deciding point to lead No. 1 North Carolina to a 7-0 victory over No. 21 Virginia on a gorgeous Friday afternoon from Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Carolina, who improved to 21-2 on the year with its fifth-straight victory, remains atop the Atlantic Coast Conference standings with a 10-1 mark. Duke, who began the day tied at the top at 9-1, visits Syracuse today at 5 p.m.
Victories from courts one and three in doubles action saw UNC pull ahead 1-0 over the Cavaliers. The second-ranked duo of Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham recorded a 6-2 win over No. 22 Meghan Kelley and Rosie Johanson. The clinching win, a 6-4 decision, came from Marika Akkerman and Makenna Jones on court three.
Graham continued her rock-solid play this spring improving to 22-0 in duals and 11-0 against the ACC. On court three, Graham disposed of Kelley, 6-1, 6-1.
Junior Chloe Ouellet-Pizer quickly followed with a 6-2, 6-1, victory on court six to put the Tar Heels ahead 3-0.
Sanford went back and forth on court two with senior Cassie Mercer. In a tough match that went in favor of the Tar Heel rookie, 6-3, 7-5, the win secured UNC's 10th league victory of 2018.
The three remaining matches were all pushed to three sets. No. 33 Daavettila was slow out of the blocks, dropping the opening set 6-0, but quickly regained her footing to win the final two sets by lopsided 6-1 and 6-2 scores.
No. 79 Aney made it 6-0 by outlasting Teodora Radosavljevic on court five and No. 18 Jones did the same on court one to improve to 11-0 against the ACC this spring.
