Top ranked UNC Downs Syracuse, 6-1

CHAPEL HILL - The top-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team cruised to a 6-1 Atlantic Coast Conference victory against Syracuse Sunday morning inside the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.Â
The Tar Heels won the doubles point with nearly simultaneous finishes on the first two courts. No. 9 Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham got off first with a 6-2 win on court one. No. 20 Sara Daavettila and Alle Sanford quickly followed by clinching the doubles point on court two, 6-0.
In singles, No. 28 Daavettila was the first to finish as she closed out court two with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. No. 93 Graham was close to follow with a 6-2, 6-0 victory on court four. These two victories continue Daavettila and Graham's perfect records in dual matches as they are both 14-0 this season.Â
No. 32 Aney clinched the win for the Tar Heels on court five after topping her opponent 6-2, 6-3. Chloe Ouellet-Pizer followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court six to give the Tar Heels a 5-0 lead.Â
No. 15 Makenna Jones wrapped up the day on court three as she battled back to force a third-set tiebreaker after dropping the first set. She won the tiebreaker 10-4 to take her match 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (4).
Syracuse (9-2, 2-2) picked up their only win of the match on court one as No. 18 Gabriela Knutson topped No. 8 Sanford in a grueling match 7-6, 7-6.
Carolina improved to 14-1 on the season and 3-0 in the ACC. The Tar Heels take a 12-day hiatus before traveling to Miami to face the Hurricanes on Friday, March 16 at 4 p.m.
