XC Finishes In 3rd & 6th At ACCs, Earning 4 All-ACC Honors
October 31, 2025 | Cross Country
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Carolina cross country wrapped up the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships with a podium team finish and four runners earning all-conference honors.
Both teams improved throughout the course, battling the muddy conditions. The women opened the race in the seventh and worked their way up to third. The men's team moved up from tenth at the 1k marker and held sixth for the last 3k of the race.
The women's team put on an incredible show on the course as they brought home the third-place team finish for the second straight year. The team finished ahead of four ranked teams. Individually for the women, Vera Sjöberg (19:13.9) and Brynn Brown (19:55.3) brought home All-ACC honors as they both finished inside the top-21 of the race.
Sjöberg led the way for the Tar Heels with her sixth-place finish. Brown earned her second straight honors at the conference meet as she crossed the finish line in 14th. Maddie Gardiner (20:39.2) had a great day as she moved up 21 spots from the 1k marker to the finish line.
The men's championship race featured nine runners who broke the previous course record, including Colton Sands (22:55.4) and Tomer Tarragano (22:55.8). The upperclassman duo also earned All-ACC honors, which, for Sands, was his second straight year.
Jacob Laney stayed patient and worked his way through the field as he started out in 100th and moved all the way up to 40th to be the third runner to cross the line for Carolina.
The trio of Tommy Latham (23:57.9), Jack Bowen (23:58.4), and Gitch Hayes (24:00.5) also worked their way through the pack in a group. The trip crossed the 1k marker in 115-123 range. The trio along with Joe Barrett (23:58.7), finished in the mid-50s, shooting up 50 spots on average.
Carolina will head to Charlottesville, Va., where the Southeast Regional Championships will be held, and both teams will look to punch their tickets back to the National Championships on Friday, Nov. 14.
