Tar Heels Headed to Wilmington for Landfall Tradition
October 25, 2018 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL – After a weekend off, the North Carolina women's golf team will round out its fall schedule in Wilmington at the 17th annual Landfall Tradition at The Country Club of Landfall. The event will be held on the Pete Dye course, a 6,166-yard, par 72 layout.
The Tar Heels will use the same starting lineup from the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, featuring Jennifer Zhou, Kelly Whaley, Nicole Lu, Mariana Ocano and Brynn Walker. Ava Bergner will participate as an individual.
The team most recently participated in the Landfall Tradition in 2016, where they placed 14th. Whaley and Walker both competed that year, with Ocano participating as an individual. Head Coach Jan Mann is also very familiar with the course, as she served as the UNCW head coach for eight years.
The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Friday in an attempt to complete the first round prior to any inclement weather approaching. The Tar Heels will play alongside Michigan State and UNCW, two familiar opponents that both participated in the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational. Saturday is scheduled to begin with a split tee start at 8:30 a.m., with Sunday being a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.
Through what has been an up and down fall season for many of the golfers, Mann feels the Tar Heels are playing better golf and can compete this weekend.
"We have worked on our iron shots into the green and putting," said Coach Mann. "Those were the areas that we saw from most of them that could have saved a shot here and there. If we can get four out of five golfers playing well, I think we can be competitive in this field."
The Landfall Tradition boasts a strong 18-team field, featuring eight teams in the Golfweek top 30.
Joining Carolina from the ACC is No. 4 UVA, No. 7 Duke, No. 13 Wake Forest, NC State and Notre Dame. No. 8 Arkansas, No. 22 South Carolina and LSU from the SEC will participate. The Big 10 brings No. 18 Purdue, No. 26 Michigan State, Michigan, Penn State and Maryland. No. 20 Furman, Oklahoma State, Central Florida and the host UNCW round out the field.
While the course sustained significant damage from Hurricane Florence, it should be ready to go by the weekend, with only a few areas still showing signs of damage.
