Tar Heels in Tenth After First Round of Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational

Chapel Hill, NC. - Senior Kelly Whaley led the way for the Tar Heels' women's golf team on day one of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational. As a team, the Tar Heels are in tenth place after the first round at the par-72, 6,379-yard UNC Finley Golf Course.
Whaley brought in an even-par 72, which featured a 2-under-par front nine. The senior finished her first round with a total of three birdies, one bogey and one double-bogey, and is currently tied for nineteenth. Whaley improved upon her 2017 Ruth Chris's Tar Heel Invitational opening round by two strokes.
In addition to Whaley, the Tar Heels posted a team score 297 (+9), which places them tenth out of eighteen teams. Freshman Jennifer Zhou carded an opening round of 1-over-par 73, with one birdie and two bogeys.
Nicole Lu finished her round at 2-over-par 74, highlighted by back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14.
Brynn Walker had a bit of an up-and-down opening round with a birdie on her opening hole, five bogeys and one double-bogey to shoot 6-over-par. Mariana Ocano matched Walker with an opening round score of 78.
Leading the way for the Tar Heels' individual competitors, Ava Bergner, fired a 3-over-par 75.
At the conclusion of the opening round, the Duke Blue Devils lead the tournament at 17-under-par.
The second round begins tomorrow at 8:51 a.m. ET.
