May 15, 2017 | Track & Field
ATLANTA, Ga. – Kenny Selmon and Ceo Ways claimed ACC championship titles at the 2017 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday. Selmon set the nation's best time in the 400-meter hurdles en route to his first ACC championship title while Ways defended his title in the men's 400m.
Selmon, from Mableton, Ga., captured the 400-meter hurdle title in a lifetime best performance of 48.76 in front of many family and friends. Selmon already ranks second in school history, but is inching closer to the school record set of 48.72 by Ken Harnden in 1995.
Ways, in only his second race all year, defended his title in the 400m with a blazing 45.55. It's his fastest time in the event in two years and ranks 15th in the nation.
The men's 4x400 relay team came up just short of its bid for a fifth straight title. The men finished second behind Clemson at 3:04.27.
RJ Alowonle and Brandon Cachon were both representing North Carolina alongside Selmon in the 400-meter hurdle final. Alowonle earned first team All-ACC honors for placing third at 50.42 while Cachon timed in at 53.14.
Darryl Shaw took home third in the men's triple jump going 51-8 ½ (15.76 meters) and earning first team All-ACC honors. Shaw completed the jump on his sixth and final attempt.
The women's 4x400 relay finished sixth after posting a 3:37.00 time.
Morgan Ilse just narrowly missed scoring for the Tar Heels with a ninth place finish in the women's 5,000. Ilse crossed the line at 16:40.58.
The men's team finished the conference championship in seventh with 55 points. The women's team finished 14th with 18.5.
The Tar Heels will send several members from both teams to compete at the NCAA East Regional Preliminary from May 25-27 for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
