UNC Drops Miami For A 7th Straight Time

CORAL GABLES, Florida - In a rematch of the 2016 ACC Championship final won by North Carolina, senior All-America Hayley Carter clinched the victory for the third-ranked Tar Heels, extending the program's ACC regular season winning streak to 32 matches.

North Carolina (17-1, 4-0 ACC) remained perfect in league play with a 6-1 win over the Hurricanes on Friday afternoon, the seventh victory in a row for UNC in the series going back to when Carter joined the program in 2014.

Second-ranked Carter, the Tar Heels' all-time wins leader, registered her 153rd career victory over No. 7 Sinead Lohan, who Carter also defeated in the semifinals of the 2016 NCAA Singles Championship last May in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Carter's 6-4, 7-5 victory on court one over Lohan made it 4-1 and an official victory for the Tar Heels. Miami (4-6, 3-2) had briefly gained a little momentum when #66 Estela Perez-Somarriba upset No. 4 Sara Daavettila, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, on court two, but Carter shut the door on the Hurricanes moments later.

UNC breezed to a 1-0 lead with a dominating performance in doubles. No. 1 Carter and Jessie Aney blanked Lohan and Maci Epstein, 6-0 on court one, and teammates Cassandra Vazquez and Alexa Graham secured the point with a 6-3 win over Silvia Fuentes and Dominika Paterova.

#24 Aney made it 2-0 Tar Heels when Epstein retired on court three in the middle of the second set.

#78 Makenna Jones increased the lead to 3-0 on court five, 6-4, 6-2, over Paterova.

No. 33 Graham picked up a three-set win over Ana Madcur - 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 - on court five, and sophomore Chloe Ouellet-Pizer also picked up a win in three sets to close out the 'Canes.

Carolina faces Florida State on Sunday in Tallahassee at 12 p.m.
