Carolina Falls To Boston College
February 9, 2017 | Women's Basketball
Boston College (9-16, 2-10 Atlantic Coast Conference) shot 63 percent from beyond the arc, making 15 of its 24 attempts, and held a 49-31 rebounding margin in the game.
North Carolina (13-11, 2-9) was paced by Jamie Cherry's career-high 31 points and six assists, while Paris Kea poured in 22 points and grabbed six rebounds. Stephanie Watts had 12.
Boston College closed the first quarter on a 14-0 run to break open what was an 11-11 game with four minutes, 15 seconds remaining in the period. Hughes scored the final eight points and totaled 11 in the quarter.
The Eagles extended it out to a 19-0 run over the first 2:10 of the second quarter. Carolina finally snapped an eight-minute scoreless stretch with a three-pointer from Watts, and later got within 14, 32-18, on a jumper from Kea.
Boston College saw its lead increase to 39-18 midway into the second quarter, but had to settle for a 41-26 lead at the break after an 8-0 Tar Heel run in the late stages of the half.
The Eagles were clinical from distance in the third period to keep the Tar Heels at arms length. Boston College knocked down nine three-pointers in the third period alone, with Taylor Ortlepp making four to lead 72-52 going to the last.
An impressive 15-3 run to open the fourth gave the Tar Heels some life. Kea's jumper got Carolina within 75-67, but another triple from Ortlepp with just over three minutes left proved to be too much to overcome.
North Carolina heads up north to face No. 20 Syracuse on Sunday at 3 p.m.
