Tar Heels Fall On The Road At NC State
February 24, 2017 | Women's Basketball
Jamie Cherry scored a game-high 25 points to pace North Carolina (14-14, 3-12 Atlantic Coast Conference). Paris Kea added 14.
In the first meeting of the season between the two rival schools, an 83-70 Carolina win on Jan. 29 in Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels tied a school record with 14 three-pointers.
On Thursday, NC State (21-7, 11-4) made 13 triples on its way to victory on senior night for the Wolfpack. Seniors Dominique Wilson (19), Ashley Williams (18) and Jennifer Mathurin (13) combined for 50 points in their final game at Reynolds.
Coupled with the Tar Heels playing without Destinee Walker and Stephanie Watts for a second game in a row, and a fast start by the Wolfpack, the home team led 30-14 as Wilson scored nine points in the opening period.
Cherry and Kea each converted three-point plays as part of a 12-2 run that brought UNC within 43-29 of the Wolfpack.
The momentum swung back in favor of NC State with 10 three-pointers in the first half. The final one by Mathurin gave the Pack a 54-33 edge at the half.
The lead grew to as many as 30, 69-39, before a 10-0 Carolina run to close the third quarter cut the deficit down to 20 points leading to the final period. The Tar Heels never got any closer in the fourth.
Carolina wraps up the regular season by hosting No. 13 Duke on Sunday at 3 p.m.
