Pitt Holds Off Carolina
January 15, 2017 | Women's Basketball
Jamie Cherry scored 13 points to lead North Carolina (12-6, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference).
The Panthers (11-7, 2-3) extended their winning streak to four games in the series by outscoring the Tar Heels 19-6 in the second quarter, and in the process extended their lead to 35-16 at the halftime break.
It was a similar performance in the second quarter against Pitt as was on display Thursday night at Duke when UNC scored a season-low four points against its bitter rivals.
Pitt used a 17-2 run spanning the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second to turn a competitive game into a one-sided affair. The Tar Heels went 9:04 between field goals as their 8-7 lead turned into a 24-10 deficit.
Carolina dug deep in the third quarter. Cherry led the response with six points. and a 14-5 run got the Tar Heels within 10, 40-30. But Pitt answered the bell by scoring 13 of the final 16 points in the period to regain its footing with a 53-33 advantage going to the last stanza.
UNC-leading scorer Stephanie Watts failed to score in double figures for just the second time in 17 games. She settled for nine points and seven rebounds. Paris Kea scored eight points.
North Carolina returns home to host Wake Forest on Thursday at 7 p.m. on the Regional Sports Network and ACC Network Extra/Watch ESPN.
